All of my life, there have been rules to follow. There was curriculum to follow in school, instruction manuals, employee handbooks.
And then came parenthood.
You hear it all the time, parents making jokes about how kids should come with instructions.
But the truth is, nothing can prepare you for being a parent.
You can read every book in the library, memorize every article on every parenting website, take to heart every piece of advice from every person you know, but you will never be ready.
And all the conflicting advice will make your head explode.
Parenting isn’t something you can learn. You can’t take a parenting class (ok, so you can but that’s beside the point) and become the perfect parent.
All you can do is be there for your child. Know that all the decisions you make, especially the difficult ones, help determine who you are as a parent – as a person.
So go ahead and read the books. Scan the websites. Obtain the advice.
But not one of them can truly tell you what is exactly right for you and your child.
Every child, every person, is different.
We’re all just making it up as we go. And that is okay.
