And now you are four…

Oh little monster. How is it that you are four?

You being in my life was unexpected from the beginning. You were unplanned, but never unwanted. Your arrival into the world was premature, catapulting me into motherhood and our lives have been a whirlwind ever since.

You are my favorite person in the world. These last 4 years of my life have been the most wonderful. They have also been the most chaotic, painful and difficult, but they have been the only time in my life that I have had a purpose. I matter, because you exist.

My favorite time of the day is when I come home from work. When you hear me come in the door, you come running. Mommy! Always a smile on your face. Hugs and kisses. It’s as if you have just been sitting around waiting for me to come back. Even when you’ve been at day care all day, playing with your friends and I am the furthest from your mind. As soon as I walk in, you run to me and want to just be with me for the rest of forever.

I want to be with you for the rest of forever too. I love reading to you, and then listening to you read the same story back to me (with your own little twists). Even though bedtime can often be a horrendous time for us, I love when we curl up together and sing lullabys. I sing softer, so I can hear your voice better.

I love that you remember minuscule details about every single superhero you have ever encountered, whether through books or movies. I love listening to you act out scenes from your favorite movies. I love to watch you run around, jacket spread like a cape and the sound effects you add to every playtime.

I love when you say, “Mommy, you’re my best.” I love when I tell you that you are my favorite, and you just sigh and say, “I know.”

It is a joy to see you run around the playground and make friends with every child there. You charm the adults, and proudly declare that every person you meet is your friend. When we eat out at restaurants, you want to know everyone’s name.

You introduce yourself with full first, middle, last without a breath in between so sometimes they miss what you said, but it’s even more a delight when you introduce yourself as Spider-Man or Batman or Superman, and refuse to divulge anything more.

There is so much more for me to teach you about the world, but I am more excited for the things left for you to teach me about myself. Your mere existence has made me a better person, and I am thankful on a daily basis that I have you.

So, my little bubbaloo, now you are four. You have mastered talking and walking and the toilet. You will start school next year. You have so much to look forward to, so much future ahead of you.

I will be right there, with you, every single step on this wonderful journey.

All I ask of you is this, stay you. Because every piece of you is incredible, and I love every little bit.

I love you little monster. Happy 4th Birthday.
